Symptoms of Deodorant Allergy

Deodorants are common toiletries needed to maintain proper hygiene. As much as it is needed to prevent underarm odor and sweating, deodorants however can have a harmful effect not just on your underarms but on your over all health as well. Some active ingredients or components in deodorants can cause allergies and inflammation of the skin.

Some people have severe allergic reactions to deodorants, while some have only amild allergic reaction to deodorants. Regardless of whether it is an acute or a mild reaction, these are all symptoms of deodorant allergy:

Peeling or chaffing of underarm skin, redness and slight to moderate itching of the underarm skin are mild symptoms of deodorant allergy. These symptoms usually start a few seconds or minutes upon skin contact to the allergen. Peeling, chaffing, cracking, dryness, and flaking of underarm skin caused by deodorant can be quickly treated by washing the underarm area with water and mild soap. Let it totally dry. The affected area may still be raw after washing, but your skin will recuperate given some time. Same treatment is done for itching and redness of underarm skin. If after washing and the itch is still getting worse, try applying an anti-itching solution that you are not allergic of. Of course, make sure not to use the same deodorant again.

People having a more severe allergic reaction may experience an oozing in the underarm area. This can be dangerous especially if the skin is open or broken. Bacteria can easily breed in this area if it is taken for granted. It is advisable to contact your doctor about it for professional help. Another more severe reaction is the development of pustules or pimple like abscess in the area. Should you experience these symptoms, wash off the deodorant from the area and seek professional medical advice. Do not pop or rub the pustules. Popping or rubbing it off may further infect your skin.

A general symptom of deodorant allergy is the development of rashes or hives. More severe symptom is a condition known as contact dermatitis. This is an allergic reaction that includes redness, intense itching or burning sensation, swelling and rashes. Given the symptoms, wash off the allergen with water and mild soap. Contact your dermatologist or allergist right away for further treatment. Be sure not to take for granted your allergies to impede further progress as these symptoms may become widespread and long term damage to your over all health may emerge.
